Sean Murray Honoured with Canada’s Top 40 Under 40

Pictou Leader Recognized with National Award.

Advocate Printing & Publishing is pleased to announce that Sean Murray, Chief Executive Officer, has been named a Recipient of Canada’s Top 40 Under 40™ for 2005.

Canada’s Top 40 Under 40™ is a prestigious national award program, which annually honours 40 Canadians in the private, public and not-for-profit sectors under the age of 40. The program, now in its 11th year, is managed by founding sponsor, The Caldwell Partners. Other sponsors include The Globe and Mail, Certified General Accountants of Canada, Air Canada and Privilege Magazine.

Sean and his peers were selected from over 1200 nominees by an independent Advisory Board, comprised of 29 business leaders from across Canada. Honourees were chosen on five key criteria including: vision and leadership; innovation and achievement; impact; community involvement and contribution; and strategy for growth.

Sean is the Chief Executive Officer of Advocate Printing & Publishing. Since joining the company in 1990, Sean has helped lead Advocate Printing & Publishing to become Atlantic Canada’s largest independent printer. The untimely death of his father, Bruce Murray, in 2004 meant that Sean had to step into the CEO’s role at Advocate Printing & Publishing, a Nova Scotia company dating back to 1891.

“I cannot think of a more deserving person,” said Frank Sobey, Chairman of Crombie REIT. “Sean has the enthusiasm, business smarts and eagerness to assume the risks that are the basic drivers of entrepreneurialism. He has demonstrated effective leadership in his own company as well as providing start up capital and know-how to several local and regional businesses.”

Sean leads the company’s business plan and growth strategy, working with the management team to undertake rapid and successful expansion.  It is now the only true, full-service printing company in Atlantic Canada providing quality printing, photography, design, signage, direct mail and distribution services.

“This is a significant honour for a select group of Canadians,” said Lisa MacDonald, CEO of the Pictou County Regional Development Corporation. “Sean has made significant contributions as a leader in his company and industry, and in our province and community. We are very proud of this prestigious honour and his commitment to our region.”

Recently, Advocate, announced a $10 million investment to the printing operation in Pictou, the largest single investment in the company’s 115-year history. The multi-million dollar press is part of Advocate’s long-term business strategy to expand its capabilities and enhance the quality of its products and service to its clients.

Advocate has moved from a small local firm to Pictou’s largest employer with a staff of 277. Through acquisitions it now operates in 13 towns and cities in three provinces.

“This honour is a tribute to my colleagues, my community and my family,” said Mr. Murray. “I am proud of the success we have had both as a company and our region, and I look forward to continued growth for Advocate and Pictou County.”

From the age of twenty-four as the youngest president of the Pictou County Chamber of Commerce Sean has been an innovator in his community, locally, provincially and nationally. He challenges the way people think about their community.

Sean is an industry leader in the community newspaper sector.  Advocate Printing & Publishing owns and produces five weekly newspapers and eleven other publications. He was a driving force in the creation of Community Media Canada and the Community Media Database Corporation, increasing that sector’s share of advertising dollars.  He has helped raise millions of dollars for various community organizations, while finding time to be an involved parent of four small children.

The 2005 Recipients of Canada’s Top 40 Under 40™ are featured in The Globe and Mail on May 2nd. Honourees will attend a series of celebratory events at the beginning of May in Toronto, including an Awards Ceremony to be held at Arcadian Court on May 2nd.
